Chelsea FC appoint Mauricio Pochettino as new manager

Roberto Di Matteo is the first manager to have won the UEFA Champions League for Chelsea

Chelsea FC have appointed Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager, the club has confirmed. Pochettino left Tottenham Hotspur by mutual consent after one season at the club, and has now agreed terms to join Chelsea on a long-term contract.

Chelsea FC Manager history

Pochettino will become the club's first manager since Roberto Di Matteo, who won the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea in 2012. Di Matteo was sacked in November 2012 and replaced by Rafael Benitez, who was himself sacked in May 2013. Jose Mourinho was then appointed as manager, but he was sacked in December 2015. Guus Hiddink was appointed as interim manager until the end of the 2015-16 season, and was then replaced by Antonio Conte.

Conte won the Premier League title in his first season in charge, but was sacked in July 2018 after finishing fifth in the league. Maurizio Sarri was appointed as manager, but he was sacked in June 2019 after winning the Europa League. Frank Lampard was then appointed as manager, but he was sacked in January 2021 after a poor run of form.

Pochettino will be tasked with improving Chelsea's fortunes on the pitch, and will be expected to challenge for major trophies. He has a proven track record of success, having won the EFL Cup with Tottenham in 2015 and 2019. He also led Tottenham to the Champions League final in 2019, where they lost to Liverpool.
